Resolved: Furnace Destroyed By Dometic Door Design Flaw
I received the check as promised.
Today, Dometic made good on their offer; I received the check as promised. I will therefore mark this complaint as favorably resolved.
Thank you, Ms. Schutz.
On 10/1/18, I was contacted by Judy Schutz, Director of Customer Service. After some emailed discussion, Ms. Schutz admitted that the installation did not block water from draining from the compartment, and that there another reason for the compartment flooding and...
Quick update: Not much happening. Dometic is vehemently insisting they are not at fault.
They insist the door is designed to admit water, and that there are weep holes to let it drain out.
Our new furnace has them; the old one did not. The old furnace installation...
The furnace was damaged beyond repair due to immersion caused by the door design flaw. The control circuit board spent some unknown time under water, the electric fan was rusted and short circuited, and the burner and other components were \irreparably rusted. The only option was to replace it, at a cost of $1736.28.
This problem is known by Dometic. My research indicates Dometic moved from the louvered furnace doors to non-louvered ones, and relocated the circuit board to keep it out of water, somewhere around mid-2016, to alleviate this problem.
Warranty Manager Kristin (no last name) has repeatedly insisted that the door "is designed to take in water. There are weep holes in the furnace door and bezel to allow this water to weep out. This is not a defect in the furnace it is a door and bezel installation issue." My RV mechanic and I have examined the new furnace, and do find weep holes. The control board has also been relocated, as you stated. We also inspected the original furnace. It has no weep holes, and contained any and all water that entered.
I noted several references in the original furnace installation manual stressing the need for a water tight installation of the door bezel to prevent water from entering the coach and to apply an RTV type sealant to prevent water intrusion. The old furnace manual also makes no mention of weep holes.
Warranty Manager Kristin (no last name) continues to insist that they, the manufacturer of the furnace and access door, is not at fault.
- During the very short life of the furnace it worked
- Avoidance of responsibility and customer service
